Alan Barber Legacy

We have some wonderful news to share with you.

Some of you may remember a previous volunteer called Alan Barber. He was a volunteer driver for over 10 years, combining his volunteering with his passion for windsurfing in Poole Harbour and, later, with working on the Basingstoke Canal. He also enjoyed cycling and purchased an e-bike, and would go off exploring the local countryside, as being busy was what Alan enjoyed.

Unfortunately, Alan had to retire from Camberley Care in 2023 due to medical reasons, something that he really did not want to do.

Sadly, he passed away at the end of 2024, leaving a substantial legacy to Camberley Care. This is a considerable amount of money, by far the most that has ever been donated to Camberley Care. Our charity has been in operation for more than 50 years, and the good work we do for the community has always been made possible by generous donors who fund our operational costs.

Over the past few months, in anticipation of receiving the legacy, the Trustees have appointed an investment committee comprising 3 current Trustees to explore how best to look after this amazing donation. We are following Charity Commission guidance by engaging a carefully selected, established wealth management company to advise and assist us in investing the funds so they will cover our operational deficits for many years to come. At all times, we remain in control and will favour a low-risk approach.

Having secured the long-term future of our current operations, the Trustees will be looking for ways to extend the benefits of the legacy beyond Camberley Care, for instance, through donations to local charities and other worthwhile causes that we know Alan would have liked. Also, this year, we are working to upgrade our IT system and office environment to further enhance the services we can provide to our clients.

We are extremely honoured that Alan chose to leave his legacy to help us do this.
